Australian author Honey Brown spent years living in small towns all around Australia, “following the work” with her husband.
A “dreamer” from an early age – she thought about things, and wrote about things. But writing wasn’t her day job.
Then 10 years ago, her life changed when a cow fell and crushed her on her property in country Victoria.
It left her unable to walk without assistance; mostly confined to a wheelchair. But it also “fast forwarded” her to a place where she could give more attention to her writing.
Brown told interviewer Carol George:
“It’s so distracting to be a writer and a Mum and so many other things that women have to be.
In a way my accident has perhaps given me the space to concentrate.”
And concentrate she has. Brown has had 2 novels published in as many years. Her third is under consideration by the publisher.
Her debut novel Red Queen needed almost no editing and bagged her the 2009 Aurealis Award and a movie deal, straight off the bat.
The Good Daughter is Brown’s second novel. It needed more work, Brown said. But it sure was worth it.
We chatted to Honey about writing, The Good Daughter and writing The Good Daughter. Have a listen:
