Monday’s Muse… Spring!

Here’s to the season of creation, Spring! As Thomas Nashe would say, “Cuckoo, jug-jug!”

To all my fellow Southern Hemispherians – happy Spring!

Today’s post is a tribute to this delightful season, which never fails to make me feel hopeful and inspired. In honour of the occasion, I’ve selected some choice Spring-themed extracts by a few poetic greats. Enjoy!

“…Air alters into glass and the whole sky
Grows brittle as a tilted china bowl..”

(From ‘Prologue to Spring’ by Sylvia Plath)

“…Through primrose tufts, in that green bower,
The periwinkle trailed its wreaths;
And ’tis my faith that every flower
Enjoys the air it breathes…”

(From ‘Lines Written in Early Spring’ by William Wordsworth)

“…When proud-pied April, dress’d in all his trim,
Hath put a spirit of youth in every thing,
That heavy Saturn laugh’d and leap’d with him. …”

(From Sonnet 98 by William Shakespeare)

“…Cold doth not sting, the pretty birds do sing:
Cuckoo, jug-jug, pu-we, to-witta-woo!…”

(From ‘Spring, the Sweet Spring’, Summer’s Last Will and Testament by Thomas Nashe)

Or, putting them all together…

“Jug-jug! A tilted china bowl
Enjoys the air it breathes
When proud-pied April
Doth not sting
The periwinkle!”

…or maybe not.

Jug-jug indeed, people!
