Happy New Year – here’s to a year full of books and reviews!
I love new years and I love making new year’s resolutions. One of my most important resolutions for 2014 is not to bother pursuing a book I’m not really into. Why? Because there are thousands of books out there I want to, but will never get the time to, read. I’m no longer going to waste precious reading moments on something I’m finding a struggle.
Besides, when I love a book, I rip through it in a matter of days or even hours. Even with a baby to look after! When I don’t, it can take me months to plod through. I find myself procrastinating instead of reading. I feel like I can’t stop the book partway through, but even when I finally make it to the end it’s with a sense of relief rather than satisfaction.
Case in point – I just devoured Eleanor Catton’s The Luminaries. Literally devoured it. Could not put it down. Check out my review here. It’s decently lengthy book, and I finished it in a few days.
By contrast, I’ve meandered through another of the books on my ‘to read’ pile for the past 6 months, and I’m still only halfway through. Last week I finally admitted defeat and put it down. The relief was overwhelming and instant! It’s not that it wasn’t a good book. It just hadn’t hooked me. I probably won’t review that one because I didn’t finish it. Suffice to say, I liked the premise, but found the suspense dropped in too many places. In the intro the author says himself he set out to write a meandering tale. And he definitely did. Maybe a little too meandering…
So with this important new year’s resolution under my belt, I look forward to a lot more reviews in the year to come!
